In response to our letter writing campaign, in which there were over 3700 letters sent to elected decision makers, Calgary Firefighters are beginning to receive COVID-19 vaccinations as Medical First Responders in Phase 2C.
This will help protect the health and safety of the public, firefighters, and their families, while ensuring the fire department has enough firefighters on duty to respond to emergencies.
Firefighters in Calgary and across Alberta don’t just fight fires. We provide direct medical patient care and respond to many different kinds of emergencies at multiple locations a day.
Fortunately this fire didn't cause even more damage. The strong wind fed the flames and made it very difficult for crews. Our thoughts are with the person that was injured, and the people that lost their home and garages.
“A lot of people don’t realize that firefighters do more than fires,” said CFA spokesperson Matt Osborne. “We respond to medical emergencies, we respond to car accidents, hazardous material calls. We deal with direct person contact, direct patient care.
“We’re just asking, when other health care providers, when other first responders are being included, we just feel it’s reasonable to be included as well in the vaccine program.”
